Week 4

Tuesday Tutorial/FMP Creative Practice Workshop

Before having this tutorial, I gathered a team (of six) to work on my
idea which I was really adamant about having as my FMP. I
decided to go with The Trials of The North Pole due to its epic and
experimental display, and being more passionate about the story of
Christmas in a dark scenario. The team I collated all have different
qualities which is extremely beneficial for this project. I shared my
story writing to everyone, so that they could understand the story,
and the feedback was extremely positive as they all really loved the
idea. I definitely needed a team for this project, as there are far too
many aspects to be doing by myself, especially given the time
restraint on delivering the project too. Furthermore, I can also learn
new skills from my team members. We will build a Third Player
Game in Unreal Engine 4, which will also include many cinematics.
This requires lots and lots of animation and environmental 3D
designs.

I first had to join in my FMP workshop with Jane(tutor) called
Creative Practice discussing our ideas in terms of our story. As I
now have a set story and a group to work with me, I explained my
idea to her, which she thought was extremely interesting. She was
very happy but wanted to know where the reindeers came from in
the narrative. I thought about this earlier and explained how we
don’t need to know this as its simply a demo. There’s a lot within the
story that the audiences question, but this is really effective as it
keeps the audience engaged throughout. Narrative is pivotal, which
is why I would need to create a script for the reader, to help with
understanding this fantasy genre. Nevertheless, the tutor was very
happy, but she told me to not leave too many questions for the
audiences and try and guide the reader.

After finishing the workshop, I continued the tutorial. My team mates
Glenda and Tristian went straight out to look up at references online
of environments and props that could inspire them for creating the
scene. They would continuously ask me questions on what I wanted
to have. I previously created a map of the story, and explained
everything to them using this while trying to help them visualise my
ideas. I gave them a few reference images to see the “mise en
scene” and to try and gather more references similar to it. I was
working on Metahuman Creator to design Santa. I asked my group constantly whether they feel Santa should look in the way I
presented. They told me where to improve such as making his nose
more elf like, his eyes more blue and his beard more of a mix
between grey and white.

What My Ears Hears Workshop homework (DAY 2 Homeowork)

Wanting to practice on Unreal Engine, I created a short quick animation of a Man playing piano in the rain. The task was to add 3 different sounds ontop of your chosen visual. I chose the voiceover, In and Out Sync and Digetic Sound. The animation starts with a top view of the floor and the rain begins. You hear the sound of rain hitting the floor and a background piano music for the feel. As the shot moves back, the non-digetic piano sound turns to digetic as audiences realise the man is playing piano in the rain. I thought the sound applied really well and was experimental, there could have been more sound effects involved. I could have improved on adding more unique sounds, and added more layers. Overall this workshop was really great for my FMP project, because it inspired me to think about how I will add sound to my final animation. It also allowed me to work with new sounds using domestic products. Even if I get a sound designer who could help me for my FMP, I still know a lot about the sounds and don’t need to rely on anyone.

Jessica Marlowe Sound Presentation

The VFX and 3D joined up to watch Marlowe’s sound for animation presentation. We introduced ourselves and she asked us about what animation soundtracks we like. The presentation contained examples of sounds being a huge, and experimental to the animation world, for example Avatar. We explored articles/interviews of other Proffesional sound artists. We did an excersize, where we did a 5 minute drawing and perform a sound ontop of the image. I drew a lightsaber, and spinned my fidget spinner for the sound over.
